The Cultural Sound Blocks of Humanity Vol.1

Radif of Iranian Music

Introduction:

To Begin at the Beginning Again!

Radif, Dastgaah, Modes and their interpretations in the discourses that shape theory and practice can be conceptualized differently across various broad theoretical paradigms.

• In their early writings, placing a particular focus on the theoretical discourse of orientalism (from pre-Saidian perspective), Doring, Nethel, Tessoge adopted a surprisingly unique approach to introduce and record Radif of Iranian Music.

• Mirza Abdullah’s Radif has been preserved and circulated through another discursive perspective that was influenced by a traditional approach and the interpretations based on the repertoire by the masters like Boroumand, Talaie, Kiani, Lotfi as well as the emergence of  fundamentalist notions among ethnomusicologists and the performers of Iranian music.

• The Post-Orientalism Community will attempt to create and expand alternative systems of discourse (discourses) by avoiding the first two discourses, taking into account contributions from international composers working through their own assumptions and hypotheses.

• Note: Post-Orientalism Community and the Noise à Noise label will provide a dedicated recording of Radif for its composers and active members.

In selecting the works,  priority goes to electronic, electroacoustic composers, and those from the Post-Orientalism Community, Noise à Noise artists, and the non-Iranian musicians together with the Iranian composers who don’t have a mastery on the performance of Iranian music instruments.
